Chapter Ten

“Heidi said Krista looked happy?” Noah drummed his fingers against his beer bottle while talking with Kyle at Mountain View Pizza’s bar on Wednesday night. He hadn’t talked to Krista since their time together on Sunday, but Kyle had told him Heidi went to a girls’ night at Krista’s house on Monday. This was his chance to get some valuable intel.

Kyle grinned as he leaned against the bar. “That’s what I’m told. I believe she used the word glowing to describe Krista.”

Glowing? “That’s good, right?” Noah wanted to make sure he was doing all the right things with Krista. He didn’t want anything to muck up his chance with her.

“Unless you accidentally exposed her to radioactive materials, yes, I’d say glowing is a good thing.” Kyle laughed. “I don’t think you have anything to worry about, man. If Krista is glowing, she’s happy. If she’s happy, you’ll stay out of the doghouse.”

“What do you know about being in the doghouse? I’ve seen you and Heidi together. You guys are like perfect.”

Kyle closed his eyes and put his hand to his heart. “We really are, but that’s mostly because of Heidi. You know what a freaking mess I was before she came to Maplehaven.”

“You weren’t a mess.” Noah stopped talking when Kyle shook his head.

“Yeah. I was. A total mess. My life was shit. I was into drugs and running with a bad crowd.” Kyle’s jaw twitched. “Heidi saved me. That’s the honest truth.” He spread his arms out. “And look at me know. King of my own pizza empire. Life is good, Noah.”

Noah finished his beer then looked to the front door as it opened and Krista and Luke walked in. “Life is good.” He slid off his bar stool and strode over to them, not able to let any distance exist between him and the woman he’d loved since the third grade.

Krista looked up as he arrived in front of them. When a smile broke out on her lovely face, the other patrons of the restaurant did not exist to him. Only the three of them mattered.

And yeah, she was glowing.

“Hey,” she said. “I found this hungry child outside. Shall we feed him?” She jostled Luke’s shoulders.

Luke put his gloved hands together and gave Noah big blue eyes. Eyes like his mother’s. “Please, sir, won’t you give a poor boy a slice of pizza?”

Noah squinted at Luke. “Will this be like that mouse and cookie story I’ve read with you? You know, if you give a boy a slice of pizza, he’ll want some fries. If you give him some fries, he’ll want some ketchup...”

“If you give him some ketchup, he’ll need napkins to wipe it off his chin,” Krista said.

“If you give him napkins to wipe it off his chin,” Luke said, “he’ll need more napkins to wipe his greasy fingers.”

“I don’t know if I want to get involved in all this.” Noah pulled Luke’s hat off, making the boy’s hair stand on end due to the static electricity.
